Information in this area covers the interesting topic of file sharing, this world wide phenomenon is a widely used aspect of the internet and it is a pupose of this site to direct users towards relevant and specific sources of information on this subject.

All information is freely available and although we hope that the information held here is of interest or helpful research, TCC will not be held responsible for any difficulties or misinformation held on other sites, neither do we accept responsibilty for any misuse of this information by any person(s) who may share or download products in breach of copyright.

Direct Connect

DC++ is used by TCC as a method of exchange amoung it's members, there are also many more freely available hubs to connect to, although in general a minimum share is required to access a group.

The benefits of TCC Hub are, tested and safe downloads (members code of conduct), instant community chat, available to members only and well cared for by The Hub Op's.

News Groups

News Servers hold information on files that are being shared by a news group, these are downloaded to your system in the form of headers which give you sufficient information to decide if you want that particular file.

A news reader program is required to read these headers and there are a few to chose from.

Bit Torrent

This protocol is peer-to-peer in nature, as users connect to each other directly to send and receive portions of the file. However, there is a central server (called a tracker) which coordinates the action of all such peers.

The tracker only manages connections, it does not have any knowledge of the contents of the files being distributed, and therefore a large number of users can be supported with relatively limited tracker bandwidth.

The key philosophy of BitTorrent is that users should upload at the same time they are downloading. In this manner, network bandwidth is utilized as efficiently as possible.

BitTorrent is designed to work better as the number of people interested in a certain file increases, in contrast to other file transfer protocols.

FTP

File Transfer Protocol is the simplest and most secure way to exchange files over the Internet. To use FTP you should acquire an FTP client. Your web browser can also make FTP requests to download programs you find on a web page.

In some instances FTP sites require a UsedID and Password but servers can also be accessed using anonymous FTP, without having to have an account.

P2P

Peer-to-peer file sharing is a system of sharing files directly between network users, without the assistance or the interference of a central server. The decentralized nature of peer-to-peer file sharing removes the need for a central server, and removes the possibility of centralized control.

Peer-to-peer file sharing networks are also more resistant to legal attacks, because there is no one central entity to file a lawsuit against. To attack a peer-to-peer file sharing network, a claimant must file suits against individual network users.

Peer to peer requires using a File Sharing Client.
